Public outdoor gyms popping up

First Published:

An adult twist on a children’s playground, outdoor gyms are popping up across the country, and the latest location has opened up in Niagara Falls.

The gym is part of a larger initiative by the city to get residents up and active.

In place of swings, slides and monkey bars are pull up bars, a leg press, and a seated row.

The equipment makes up Niagara Fall’s first public outdoor gym located along the Millennium Trail. The metal equipment can be used during all seasons by anyone over 14.

The city has a partnership with the YMCA, where similar outdoor equipment has been installed for members at the McBain location.

Hamilton, Toronto and Kitchener are also among the cities home to these adult jungle gyms.

There are 8 pieces of equipment available for the public to use, and each one has detailed instructions on how to properly use it, making it appropriate for anyone from a novice to an expert.

The outdoor gym is part of Niagara Falls’ Operation Awesome Playgrounds initiative, which aims to install ten new playgrounds a year.

Working up a sweat without sacrificing the sunshine.
