Senate approves pot bill with dozens of amendments

First Published:

The Senate has approved legislation to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, but with nearly four dozen amendments.

Bill C-45 passed the upper house by a vote of 56-30, with one abstention.

The bill now goes back to the House of Commons.

The government will have to decide whether to approve, reject or modify the changes before returning it to the Senate for another vote.

Most of the Senate’s amendments are minor, but about a dozen are significant – including one to allow provinces to prohibit home cultivation of cannabis if they choose.

The bill initially called for allowing four marijuana plants per dwelling.

The approval gets Canada one step closer to lifting the country’s 95-year-old prohibition on recreational cannabis.
