Guilty verdict in the trial of Hamilton police officer Craig Ruthowsky

First Published:

Hamilton police officer Craig Ruthowsky was found guilty Wednesday afternoon of four of the five charges against him. Guilty of bribery, trafficking cocaine, obstruction of justice and breach of trust. Not guilty on the conspiracy to traffic marijuana charge.

Ruthowsky’s mother, sister and wife all wept and expressed their shock at the verdict. His sister running from the room, his wife Christine, who is also a Hamilton police officer, unable to keep her normal composure. But for the crown prosecutors, this was a difficult case and a gratifying victory.

Crown prosecutors John Pollard and Phil Tsui say this case was difficult in part because there is little legal precedent. Few police officers in Canada, if any, have faced such a slew of egregious charges as Craig Ruthowsky.

Ruthowsky’s lawyer declined to comment after the verdict but he is almost certain to appeal. The crown says he thinks a prison term is warranted, that’s what he’ll be asking for when Ruthowsky comes back for sentencing on May 11.

He will also be prosecuting the next case on 16 other charges against Ruthowsky. He says it’s a different case with different witnesses although the allegations are similar.

Police chief Eric Girt released a statement saying he respects the court’s decision but won’t be commenting further.
