Ice Storm Warning in Southern Ontario

First Published:

Not only is a wind warning in place with gusts of 100 km/h possible, but a freezing rain warning is also in effect for all of Southern Ontario including Niagara, Hamilton, Halton, Peel and Toronto.

Meanwhile, Hydro One had extra crews on standby, workers with Alectra Utilities were on overdrive as 15,000 in St. Catharines were without power today.

The freezing rain is causing dangerous road conditions.

In some areas the roads are snow covered, plows were out across the region this afternoon.

In Hamilton, city crews will be working around the clock despite thinking that the winter weather would be over by now.

Dan McKinnon from the city of Hamilton says the city is preparing for many scenarios over the weekend.

Alectra Utilities representatives say in the face of an ice storm everyone needs to be prepared.

The winds are gusting, the freezing rain is coming down hard. The city says their first priority are the roads, and then they will get to the sidewalks so while you should not be driving in this weather, its best that you do not walk around either as it might be icy.

A safety kit could come in handy in case there are massive power outages overnight.

Environment Canada says the ice storm pelting parts of Southern Ontario could be historic, potentially downing trees and power lines and has already led to widespread power outages in Niagara.

The weather left roads slippery, at a time of year when many people had already removed their winter tires.

Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said there had been hundreds of collisions on the highways surrounding Toronto.

Pearson Airport advised passengers to check their flight status before leaving, with about two dozen flights cancelled or delayed by this afternoon.

Meanwhile, various universities including McMaster, Ryerson, Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier opted to delay weekend exams due to the weather.

It may technically be spring according to the calendar, but the forecast has left much of the region scrambling to prepare for an ice storm that is currently hitting Hamilton and most of the golden horseshoe.
