Dozens of cats are adopted after 150 are seized from a Niagara home

First Published:

After nearly 150 cats were seized from a Welland home last month, the SPCA says the community response was “tremendous.” Within a week, every single one of the adoptable cats had found their forever home.

It was a shocking story that motivated many to act. 146 cats were discovered living in a Welland home, in what investigators believe was a hoarding situation.

“We do believe it’s a mental health issue and because the cats weren’t in any real distress, we decided not to proceed with charges.”

The Welland SPCA was forced to close its doors for a day to take care of the massive influx of cats, but it wouldn’t need to stay that way for long.

“We had line-ups at the Pet Smart stores in St. Catharines and Niagara and also at our cat adoption centre. People as soon as the hear about it, they lined up.”

While all of the adult cats have been adopted, there are still about 25 kittens left that aren’t quite ready to go to their forever homes.
