Man apprehended after 9-hour standoff with Hamilton police

A nine-hour standoff with Hamilton police has ended peacefully after a 53-year-old man was apprehended by police early Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews responded to a person in crisis call at an apartment building on Wentworth St. near Stinson St. around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say a man armed with a knife had barricaded himself inside a third-floor apartment unit.

Tactical officers and negotiators were called in to assist. Shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Emergency Response Unit entered the home and apprehended the man without injury.

He was taken to hospital for assessment. Police say the man will not be facing any criminal charges.

Investigators say there were no concerns for public safety.
