Canada captures gold in mixed doubles curling

First Published:

Canada has won the first-ever Olympic gold medal in mixed doubles curling.

John Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes beat defending world champions Jenny Perret and Martin Rios of Switzerland 10-3.

Mixed doubles curling made its Olympic debut in Pyeongchang. It is a shorter, faster game with curlers sweeping their own rocks after throwing them.

The win marks Canada’s third gold medal of the Pyeongchang Games.

Winnipeg’s Lawes was third for the Jennifer Jones team that took home gold for women’s team curling in 2014.

Ottawa’s Morris was vice for Kevin Martin when they took the men’s team title in 2010.

Speedskater Kim Boutin has won her fire Olympic medal. The 23 year old captured bronze in the short track speed skating 500 metre race.

Canada’s Alex Gough made an historic win, capturing Olympic bronze at women’s luge. It’s Canada’s first ever medal at women’s luge.

The Canadian women’s hockey team also competed early Tuesday defeating Finland 4-1 in their second game of the tournament.
