A special weather statement is in effect for the Golden Horseshoe with up to 15 centimetres of snow expected for some areas.
Environment Canada is warning drivers to exercise caution as they head out onto the roads as falling snow may cause lower visibility.
The weather agency says areas close to the Lake Ontario shoreline may see slightly higher amounts due to extra moisture from the lake.
The City of Hamilton is expecting five to 10 centimetres of snow from a storm system that will mainly effect the American side of the border.
Niagara Region is on the northwestern edge of a storm system and will receive about 10 to 15 centimetres.
The snowfall will likely have a major impact on the morning commute and drivers are being urged to drive carefully and allow for extra time to reach your destination.
The snowfall is expected to taper off by Wednesday afternoon.

Good morning #HamOnt snow is falling. No cause for alarm but traffic will be stalling. So don’t try to rush, be patient, be kind. If we all work together, we’ll have peace of mind. Have a good day, stay safe and warm, heed this advice and you’ll weather the storm. pic.twitter.com/W857fb6yxx
