The dangers of the Tide pod challenge

First Published:

Eating laundry detergent on camera is an actual thing, mainly among teens. The ‘Tide pod challenge’ as its called is the latest viral trend and its resulted in more than 40 hospitalizations in Canada and the U.S. this month alone. YouTube is now deleting videos of anyone attempting to eat the laundry detergent.

The Welland firefighters even tweeted a cheeky response, “If you want a real challenge and want to learn how to use these properly stop by a station and we’ll give you a lesson on doing laundry!”

At least 10 deaths have been linked to ingesting these pods in the past.

“They can exasperate the liquid into their lungs by inhaling it, seizures, vomiting, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and they have the potential to be fatal.” Mayram Traub, Niagara EMS.
