Two family pets killed in overnight fire in Hamilton

First Published:

Two family pets are dead following an early morning fire at a two-storey home in Hamilton.

Firefighters were called to 227 St. Clair Blvd. just after midnight on Tuesday.

Officials say the fire started in the basement and spread upwards causing a part of the main floor to collapse.

A husband and wife were inside the home at the time of the blaze and managed to get out safely. The couple’s two pet cats were killed in the dire.

The man told CHCH News the fire has left them completely devastated.

The cause has yet to be determined but it is not considered suspicious.

Damage is estimated at roughly $400,000.

Less than two hours, firefighters responded to a report of heavy smoke on the 17th floor of an 18-storey high rise on Forest Ave.

Crews found a fire in the garbage chute on the second floor and quickly put it out. No injuries were reported.

Damage is estimated at approximately $10,000.
