An early morning east-end crash has left two Hamiltonians fighting for their lives.

The two vehicle crash happened on Barton Street near Kenilworth Avenue at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

People in the area who heard the crash and came out to help said they’re in shock of what they saw, which included seeing a heavily damaged SUV.

“It’s traumatizing to see something like that,” one resident said. “I’ve never seen something like that. They weren’t wearing seat belts by the looks of it because the girl was hanging out of the window.”

Police said a male driver and female passenger traveling in a Chevrolet SUV were both in their 30’s and from Hamilton.

“There is some indication that the Chevy vehicle came over into the east bound lane and side swiped the Ford and then continued going west and lost control after that then struck the church,” said Det. Const. Wes Wilson.

A white Ford felx that was side swiped was being driven by a man, who suffered minimal injuries. But the man and woman in SUV are fighting for their lives.

Several nearby residents who ran to the scene right after the crash said that they thought the woman in the SUV was dead.

“We put our hands in front of her nose, there was no chest movement the whole time we were standing there waiting for police to get there,” a neighbour said.

Police said at first they were called to the scene for a fatal collision.

“This came in as a possible fatality,” Wilson explained. “The female passenger had passed away. But at this point both the parties in the vehicle are still alive. They are in life threatening condition at the Hamilton General, but nobody is deceased.”

The intersections of Barton between Kenilworth and Tragina were closed until 12:30 this afternoon.

Police are asking witnesses to come forward but at this stage in the investigation they cannot confirm if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
