Push for change

A man pushing a shopping cart had heads turning as he walked on Halton regional roads. He’s pushing his cart across the country, bringing awareness to homelessness.

Joe Roberts has been doing this for 180 days, raising awareness for an issue he once struggled with. He left a difficult home at 15, turned to drugs and started living on the streets. Nearly a decade later, he was living under a bridge in Vancouver when he had his turning point just a few days before Christmas.

“It was raining like it is today, I didn’t want to go collect bottles and cans so I went into a pub and sold the boots on my feet and it was in that moment I believe I became willing to change and do something different.”

With the help of his mom and a cop, he went to rehab, graduated college and became a successful business man, earning his first million before turning 35. Now he’s campaigning to keep other vulnerable young people from becoming homeless. The journey is expected to end more than a year from now, when he reaches his final destination in Vancouver next September.
