New video from Robert Badgerow’s murder trial as the jury heard several people identify Badgerow’s voice on a 911 call that was made two days after Diane Werendowicz’s body was found. While police believe the caller and killer are the same man, today the jury heard testimony from a man who thought someone else made that call back in 1981
The fourth week of Robert Badgerow’s murder trial wrapped up in Kitchener today. It’s the fourth time the Hamilton man has faced charges in the 1981 death of 23-year-old Diane Werendowicz. The jury has heard several people identify Badgerow’s voice on a 911 call that was made two days after her body was found. Police believe the caller and killer are the same man, because of details that had been kept secret.
This is a Hamilton Police interview from April 1998. Four months earlier, police had asked the public to listen to a 911 call from 1981, it contained details of the rape and strangulation of Diane Werendowicz that had never been shared by police. This team of detectives thought the recording could help find her killer.
Detective Wayne Bennett played the tape for Tim Bradshaw, who listened to the recording half a dozen times.
“I’m trying to remember the way Brian talked. The way he said blond. That’s the way Brian said blond. But it’s been so long since I’ve heard Brian’s voice, I couldn’t pinpoint, but the way he’s talking, it does sound like Brian.”
Bradshaw’s former room-mate Brian Miller was convicted of a series of sexual assaults in the 1980s and lived in the same building as Diane Werendowicz in 1981. The ravine where she was killed is directly behind the building. Robert Badgerow lived in the neighbouring building.
On the stand today, police case manager Steve Hrab testified that Bradshaw’s identification of Brian Miller’s voice was very poor, and police wouldn’t have relied on it.Hrab said if Miller’s dna had matched the semen found inside Diane Werendowicz, he would have been arrested.
Instead, Robert Badgerow’s dna matched the semen. He was arrested in december of 1998.
This trial resumes on Monday.
