One home is destroyed, another badly damaged after an overnight fire in a townhouse complex on the east mountain.

Claudio Mostacci, Public Information Officer with Hamilton fire says all seven occupants were able to get out of the home safely, as well as two dogs.

The fire broke out in basement of 1338 Upper Gage Ave. just after 2:30 am, and spread quickly to the neighbouring townhome. A total of six units were evacuated as fire crews doused the flames, occupants were allowed back inside a short time later, except those that lived in the two homes that sustained severe damage, which have been deemed inhabitable.

Damage is estimated to be around $400,000.

Mostacci says although the cause of the fire is undetermined at this point, the Ontario Fire Marshal will not be called in, because foul play is not suspected.
