Today is National Coffee day which is perfect because there’s nothing like a cup of coffee to warm you up on a rainy day. It’s a $6 billion industry here in Canada and according to the Coffee Association of Canada, aside from water, coffee is the most consumed beverage in the country. The average Canadian drinks over 3 cups of it per day and as it turns out, that’s good for you.

“It helps to lower the risk of a variety of chronic diseases such as different types of caner, coronary heart disease, stroke and even things like depression and Parkinson’s disease.” Christy Brissette.

Christy Brissette is a registered dietician and an avid coffee drinker, she has organizations like the World Cancer Research fund and the World Health Organization backing her up on the benefits of coffee. But there is such a thing as too much coffee. It’s recommended that you limit your coffee or caffeine intake overall to 400 milligrams a day. That would be the equivalent of four cups a day or about five espresso shots.

“What you put in your coffee can make it a healthy choice as well. So, if you put some almond milk, or a little milk, put some cinnamon, try not to load up on too much sugar.”

So pumpkin spice latte’s and caramel latte supremes are not the best choices for your health but if you can keep it simple there are studies that find coffee can even lead to a longer life.
