The man who was Diane Werendowicz’ boyfriend when she was killed in 1981 was back on the stand in Kitchener today. He was testifying for the fifth time about what he knew back then. It’s the fourth time Robert Badgerow has gone on trial for the murder.

Today the jury heard from several witnesses, but some of those witnesses have died in the 35 years since Diane Werendowicz was killed, so the lawyers had to read from transcripts from previous trials. The jury was thrust back into the late 70s today as they were shown photos of Diane Werendowicz’ Jerome crescent apartment. Colin Vanderbrink said the apartment looked familiar he and Werendowicz dated for about four years and even lived together for a time, but he said they broke up 3-4 times and their relationship was on and off. They saw a photo that Colin took of Diane, with Lake Ontario spread behind her. She wears combs in her hair, like one that was seen in her bedroom, and one that was found in the ravine near her lifeless body.

Lawyers also read transcripts from the coroner and the then 12 year old who found Werendowicz when she was playing hide and seek with her friends in the ravine off Queenston rd and Lake avenue. She testified that Werendowicz “was laying like she was struggling to get up,” and that she was struck by the lifeless fingers still clutching twigs.

The jury comes back for more evidence on Monday. They’ve been told they’ll hear more about how the case ties to Robert Badgerow who was a Dofasco worker in 1981, and who was working right beside a phone where a suspicious 911 call was made days after the murder.
