The Governor of North Carolina has declared a state of emergency in Charlotte after protests turned violent overnight in response to Tuesday’s officer involved shooting of a black man.

A man is in critical condition after being shot during last night’s protests. He was shot by an unknown person and not an officer. Police say he’s now on life support.

The protests started out peaceful before shots rang out at two Charlotte hotels . Police were out in riot gear, using flash grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse crowds.

Hundreds took to the streets protesting Tuesday’s police shooting of 43-year-old Keith Scott.

Officers justified the shooting saying Scott ignored officer’s commands drop his weapon. Witnesses say Scott didn’t have a gun, and was holding a book and was shot while waiting for his son to get off the bus.

The officer who shot Scott is now on paid leave.

Several people are reported to have been injured in last night’s demonstrations, including some police officers .

North Carolina’s Governor has sent in the National Guard and the highway patrol to help police on the ground.
