A large fire in Hamilton’s east end has caused about $700 000 in damage.  The Hamilton fire department says careless smoking is to blame for the blaze that damaged three homes.

It started early yesterday afternoon near Roxborough and Belmont Avenue, a few blocks north of Gage Park.  It quickly spread to the neighbouring homes, collapsing the roof of number 150 and melting the siding off 146, 16 fire trucks were called out. The fire destroyed one home and damaged two others. One firefighter was taken to hospital, but has since been released.
