The province gave Mohawk College a big boost by his morning, to expand their city school program to the tune of $1.6 million. Some of that money will go towards the launch of a new mobile classroom that they hope will provide educational opportunity. The mobile city school will be driven to different priority neighbourhoods and offer free courses and workshops.

Organizers are hoping a mobile classroom will bridge the gap between those who can, and can’t make it to campus, by bringing Mohawk College right to their neighbourhoods. The project aims to improve access to post-secondary education for students with disabilities, at-risk youth, those who may not have access to transportation, and for indigenous communities. There are no confirmed destinations yet but a few places being considered are Halton, Oshwekan, and Hamilton’s east end.

Courses such as welding and health studies will run for four weeks before the classroom moves on to a new location. Students will be able to use any course credits gained towards a full diploma.
