A weekend train derailment in Toronto, is raising concerns throughout the GTHA over the transportation of hazardous goods in densely populated areas. CP Rail now saying human error is to blame for this weekend’s accident.

Residents say it’s a “miracle” no one was hurt, after three freight cars and a locomotive were knocked off their tracks yesterday when two Canadian Pacific trains side-swiped each other. Today, the trains are gone and crews are cleaning up the mess, but concerns over the crash linger. The Transportation Safety Board says the trains were carrying a small amount of dangerous materials, including batteries, aerosol containers and non-flammable gases. These hazardous materials run through the neighbourhood all the time, just about 100 metres away from homes, residents say they’re concerned a disaster could at any moment.

CP Rail and the Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate, but it could take months before we find out exactly what caused the crash.
