The province announced two small changes to the liquor license act that they say will help local wineries grow and improve customer experience. The Finance Minister presented the changes at Inniskillin Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake today. The co-founder of the winery says the adjustments are minor and that he hopes the province will do more for local business.

If you head out to a winery in Niagara you may want to take a tour, sample a few products, go to the restaurant on site for dinner and then buy some wine on the way out. In the past, consumers would have to pay for everything separately in differently locations at a winery, the latest change allows visitors to put it all on one bill. And there’s another small change, the director of hospitality at Inniskillin says customers are now allowed to stroll the property with an open glass of wine.

The province says the change will impact the consumers the most, it is expected to grow business for the wineries but the co-founder of Inniskillin says the province could still do more. Donald Zirarldo, co-founder of Inniskillin wants the government to focus on adding space at the LCBO for Ontario wineries instead of international labels.

“In Canada I think the shelf space for VQA is maybe 11 or 12%, you know we should be up at 50%”

The Finance Minister says the province has plans to help domestic wine sales.

“In the wine industry we are looking at expanding into the grocery stores as well and that’s just going to provide greater distribution.”
