A St. Catharines woman is fighting for her life after fire engulfed her home just after 1:30 Thursday morning in the city’s east end. A neighbour posted a video on Snapchat this morning where you can see dark thick smoke billowing from a 1 and a half storey home on Bloomfield Avenue.

Police were the first on the call, they tried breaking into the house but the smoke was too intense. When fire crews arrived they managed to pull out a 63-year-old woman. She was found unconscious on the kitchen floor, that’s were officials say the fire started. The victim, identified by neighbours as only Debbie, was taken to Hamilton General with burns and smoke inhalation. She was the only person home at the time. Police however say there was a dog inside, but it’s unaccounted for.

Two Niagara Regional police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation but were later released. Fire officials say it’s not clear yet if the smoke detectors in the home were working. The fire was contained to the kitchen, damages are estimated at over $100 000.
