55 year old Fort Erie man is dead after his motorcycle struck an air mattress on Hwy 406

OPP are appealing to the owner of an air mattress to come forward after a fatal crash closed Highway 406 in Welland.

OPP say a group of motorcyclists crashed after trying to avoid an air mattress that was on the northbound lanes. OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt confirmed that 55 year old Donald Pidgeon from Fort Erie is dead and his passenger is in hospital with serious injuries.

It happened around 9:30 Friday night in the northbound lanes of the 406, south of Woodlawn road. Three motorcycles came across the air mattress, the first driver was able to avoid it but the 55 year old and his passenger were ejected from the second bike. A third biker tried to move around the air mattress but hit the second bike.

Anyone with information is asked to call OPP or CrimeStoppers.

Very tragic. A reminder for some to strap down your loose items when driving.

people need to secure what they transport better, have even seen someone holding a mattress on their hood with their hand once

If mattress removed when first reported earlier, may have saved from happening.
