The remains of two people have been pulled from a South Cayuga home destroyed by fire earlier today. As Lauran Sabourin reports, the fire was so destructive that identifying the victims and how they died is likely going to take some time.
It was just after 9:00 this morning when neighbours on Lakeshore Road in South Cayuga near Dunnville, noticed smoke billowing from the home at 2661 Lakeshore Road.
Neighbours were reporting they heard an explosion.
“There were some initial reports of possibly some explosion. We don’t see any significant explosion damage, it could be a propane cylinder” said Haldimand Fire Chief Rob Grimwood.
By early this afternoon the house was just a pile of charred rubble.
A couple lived in the house. This afternoon the remains of two people were discovered. At this point investigators can’t confirm whether or not it’s the homeowners, they can’t even say whether it’s a man and a woman.
Investigators with the Fire Marshal’s office were called in as they always are when someone dies in a fire.
While waiting, Haldimand firefighters were putting out hotspots. “We’re finding a balance between applying enough water to cool the remaining burning embers and limit the smoke, but not applying so much water that we destroy any evidence.”
Family and neighbours were extremely upset, understandable in a small community like South Cayuga where everyone knows each other.
The probe into this blaze is going to continue for days. Investigators will be hunting for the cause of this fire that tore through the house so rapidly that the people inside couldn’t call for help.
