Prisoner Collapses at Courthouse

First Published:

Hamilton Police and paramedics were called to the John Sopinka Courthouse this afternoon after a prisoner collapsed.

A 52 year old Hamilton woman was found without vital signs in her cell, but paramedics were able to bring her back to life.

Hamilton Police tell me the woman was given Narcan, a medicine that combats the effects of an opioid overdose, but they wouldn’t say if the woman did in fact overdose.

She was also given CPR before being taken to hospital in an ambulance with a police escort.

Staff Sgt. Oliver Mann said that she collapsed around 4 o’clock in her cell in the basement of the courthouse. Guards were able to see her right away, and call for help.

Police expect the woman to be alright.

In May, three Constables were exposed to fentanyl at the courthouse, and the building was shut down for three hours for that investigation.

Nothing like that happened in this case, but officers were on radio silence, and weren’t allowed to radio to one another.

The woman was taken to hospital just before 4:30, and the scene was cleared shortly after that.
