Over 3000 rowers and spectators from around the world have gathered in St.Catharines this week for the 134th running of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.

Races are being held ever 6 minutes. This year’s Regatta features just over 22 hundred athletes.

Countries like the U.S., Australia and the U.K. are well represented during the weeklong competition.

In total 160 clubs are competing in this year’s event including 49 clubs from Canada.

Port Dalhousie has hosted the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta since 1903.

Ken Campbell from the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta says, “If you go around the world to different events. people are always talking about this event that is being held here.”

Races started as early as 8 in the morning and as late as 8 in the evening.

Henley Island is home turf for many Canadian competitors including Niagara Falls native Alex Powell. “I am lucky to live where the best rowing in the world is, so we got this course right here. We’ve had the world championships here before. It is a world class course.”

While many of the world’s best rowers are competing in the Olympics right now, organizers believe the exposure will only help grow the sport in the future.
