$125K Fine for ArcelorMittal Dofasco

First Published:

ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton has been fined $100,000, plus a 25% victim fine surcharge, after a worker was injured.

In January 2009, he was helping change a crane hook block when his lanyard was caught by the crane’s motor drive shaft — pulling him into the motor, causing serious injuries. Ontario’s labour ministry ruled that there was no guard on the drive shaft.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that workers would be protected from moving parts. The 25% victim fine surcharge goes into a provincial fund assisting crime victims.
